Can anyone suggest some good cameras for making films? I'm used to using to using the old PD150, and am looking for something a little more modern. What would people suggest?

I've heard mixed views on the V1 (which is an updated version of the Z1). Depends on your budget really, I would go for a Red if I had the funds, but at the moment I'm thinking about a Panasonic SD100, as it records HD video to an SD card and has a focus ring.

My choices right now...

Sony EX1 (great little camera, especially when coupled with my Letus Extreme 35mm lens adapter)

Canon EOS Mark 5D Mark II (SLR, but records 1080p video at a high quality)

And later on in the year.

Red Scarlet 5k (S35 sensor)

Ps Wiggy, was the PD150 not more Z1/EX1 sized?

Weird, I haven't seen a PD150 in years and in my head it's about the size of my EX1 but with a smaller lens.

Another camera I really like is the JVC HD200.

hi John and all...

Id recommend the JVC HD200 if you have the budj for it but always remember imagination and innovative approaches are more than half the game.....

John - you mentioned Kicks and Salvage. Both awful and terribly below average attempts at local filmaking trying ever so hard to punch above their weight but failing unbelievably....

and they probably used better spec cameras that the ones discussed here

JVC HD700 is going to be out soon. Same ergonomics as the HD200 but with full 1080p HD recording to SD cards. Looks like a nice cam.

John, it's best to say what your budget actually is then we can suggest a camera to fit it. At the moment I'm just guessing.

Take a look at the Canon HV30. Nice little HD cam, but minimal manual controls. Under decent light it's not a bad image though.

I think they are about £650.

Or if you want a larger shoulder mounted camera, have a look at the Sony HD1000. It's about £1200 inc vat but image quality is similar to the HV30.

John

You should get some really decent results with that.

Consult with Chris Moll....
