I think the 35mm lens adapters really do the trick. You've got a lot of depth of field in the shots. You did a really good job on color grading as well. Is the grain done in post? (the grain looks really good)

No the HVX is a bit of a noisy beast to be honest, that's why I switched to the EX1. I prefer to add it if necessary rather than try to take it away.

Add to that lens adapters also add a layer of grain from the ground glass and voila! Grain.

HVX202a actually is far less noisy than the earlier HVX200 though.

Also there isn't much in the way of a color grade, I just brightened a few shots up. That's one thing about the HVX series, they do capture nice vivid colours.

I'm in my second year of TV production, I'm just learning about lens adapters and matteboxes now in my advanced camera techniques class. I haven't tried the picture profiles on EX3, but that might be the trick in getting more vivid colors.

I noticed in the youtube version there is considerably less grain. Do you know why that is?

Anyway, its good to see a movie like this, because it gives me hope that I can get my projects to look a little more like film and less like video.

Thanks McMilly. I think the reason why there's less grain in the YouTube version is that there's less compression. But there is grain in the original footage.

There's a training DVD for the EX1 called the Vortex DVD, there's some settings that they suggest that they've posted on the internet. Try sticking those in the picture profile settings, seems to bring out the colours. That and light it well. I find that lit EX1/3 footage is a world apart from unlit stuff. Them CMOS chips love light.

Ps, switch sharpening off. That's just artificial sharpening (or edge enhancement as it's otherwise called) which causes edge halo's. It makes it look even more like video. Turning it off makes it look a little more filmic and a bit more natural. Great thing about the EX series is that even with sharpening off, it's still very sharp!

Oh and don't forget the Red Scarlet camera... That's going to be the one to have!

Actually that's not envious, that's the look of someone feeling downright sorry for you. Sell it and get yourself a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Then you wouldn't need to have camera esteem issues. You would have a decent camera at last and as an added bonus, you wouldn't need a lens adapter :)

the red scarlet certainly would be nice, but $3000 just for the body, it may end up being pricey with the rest of the accessories. I thought the canon EOS 5D was a digital camera?

You're right it's a digital SLR, but it can also shoot 1080p HD video at 30fps to SD cards. Very nice it looks too. Good under low light as well. All you need is a good little camera stabilizer and plenty of SD cards (you get 12 minutes on a 4gb card).

I think Scarlet will be better than all mentioned on this thread. I want the Scarlet 5k with a Nikon mount.

No, 5k is only a super 35mm sized sensor, for Imax you would want much more. That's why they are bringing out larger sensors (like the 28k!)

Imax is shot on 65mm film stock by the way. A lot of movies are blown up to this, but some are specially shot. For The Dark Knight, portions of the film were blown up from 35mm and some were shot specifically on 65mm.

The maximum that's currently being digitally projected at the moment in cinemas is 4k. Most digital cinemas are doing 2k. But even so, the more you begin with the better the downconvert will be. If you want great 2k, shoot 4k...

Really nice quality version of the montage up on Vimeo now. It replaces the version in the first post.
